TP-Link Smart Wi-Fi Light Switch Review

Background

The TP-Link Smart Wi-Fi Light Switch is a great option for turning a single pole switch into home automation magic. Anything you have hooked up to a switch currently can be controlled such as lights, fans, and garbage disposals (probably not the best use case though). This switch will not do dimming. The LUTRON PD-6WCL-WH Caseta Wireless In-Wall Smart Dimmer Switch does support dimming.

Specifications

  • Date First on Sale: June 1, 2016
  • Single Pole - One Way
  • Rated for 600w bulb or 15A load
  • 2 Year Warranty

Features

  • Compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant
  • LED indicator lights up when the switch is off to make it easy to find in the dark
  • Away mode allows your lights to turn on/off randomly to simulate somebody being at home
  • Remotely turn on/off with the Kasa app
  • Compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant

Performance and Use

Because this switch works off your home WIFI, you could have issues if you have an older router or have spotty WIFI coverage where the switch is located. At my house, I recently installed the Google OnHub router and have been very pleased with it's speed and coverage.

The Kasa Andriod and Kasa iOS app allows you to do the following:

  • Add/Configure/Monitor your switch
  • Remotely turn on/off lights and set to away mode
  • Schedule switch to turn on/off based on a schedule you set
The Kasa IFTTT channel allows integration with other home automation solutions such as Ring, Smarter Things, WeMo, and Nest.

Included in the Box

  • HS200 TP-Link Switch
  • White faceplate
  • Wire nuts and guide

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • No hub required. Works off the wireless you already have in your home.
  • It's a physical switch, so you can still turn it on/off if you are having issues with your wireless or your phone is dead

Cons

  • No ability to dim the switch (try the [Lutron Caseta Smart Dimming Switch](http://amzn.to/2xH8lPF) if you need that capability)
  • If you are replacing the typical switch in a multi-gang installation with a small cutout in the faceplate, you will need to buy a new faceplate (a single white faceplate comes with it)
  • Requires a neutral electrical wire See the installation manual for more details

Price History

The TP-Link Smart Wi-Fi Light Switch retails for $39.99, but the price is often lowered to $34.99. The lowest price was $24.79 on Nov 27, 2016.
